EDRE 552 – Foundations of Literacy
Course Description
There are three online seminars that you will complete for this course. Two of the seminars incorporate the Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction, identified by the National Reading Panel (2000) as key to teaching students to read: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. A third seminar integrates all of the components for effective instruction. Additionally, a strand on understanding and working with diverse learners is interwoven in each seminar. Reading materials and assignments will provide you with an understanding of current theory of literacy instruction and the factors affecting literacy development.
